Saxophone

Saxophone

The saxophone is a wind instrument of the woodwind family but curiously unlike all other instruments of this family, it was never made of wood.

Made of brass it has a long tube with a curvature and it also uses a single reed. It isn't an orchestra instrument, but because of its mighty sound, it was adopted by military bands and in popular groups specially jazz bands.

A bit of history...

The saxophone was invented in Belgium in 1840 by Adolphe Sax. There are 8 members of the sax family from the highest pitched (sopranino) to the deepest (sub-contrabass). In classical music it was made famous by Debussy in the Rapsodia for Saxofone and Orchestra; and by Mussorgsky in his work Pictures at an Exhibition, where it represents an old castle.
