Caxixi

An instrument of African origin, caxixi is one of the remnants of the Bantu culture and arrived in Brazil with slaves from the Congo and Angola regions.

How does it work?

The caxixi is percussed indirectly, and the sound is produced when the instrument is shaken or rattled.

A bit of history...

Coming from Africa, it was used in ceremonial and ritual contexts.

In Brazil, caxixi began to be used in popular culture, especially in capoeira, becoming a partner of the berimbau and doubling the basic rhythmic pattern given by the drumstick, enriching it with rhythmic adornments.

Currently the caxixi is found mainly in capoeira groups and candomblé rituals, very present in the state of Bahia.
