Composer and flautist, he is considered the father of choro. He was creator of Choro Carioca, first instrumental ensemble to use the flute, cavaquinho and the guitar together. He became the most popular instrumentalist in Rio de Janeiro in the Empire. Flor Amorosa, his greatest success, became known as the first composed choro.
