João Roberto studied music and piano at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music, in Rio de Janeiro. At age 19, he wrote for Leon Eliachar and Geysa Boscoli's "Sputnik" magazine. He became a great composer of samba and carnival marchinhas, hits known until the present day, as Cabeleira do Zezé (in a partnership with Roberto Faissal) and Mulata iê-iê-iê.
