One of the greatest Brazilian poets, he was also instrumentalist (played viola) and composer. He was nicknamed "The Mouth of Hell" due to the satirical and malicious content of his texts. Although most of his compositions were lost, it was discovered recently that his Marinícolas parody was sung as a version of "Marizápalo", a popular melody of the seventeenth century.
