Graduated in piano, Helza studied composition with Lorenzo Fernandez and presented herself as a composer for the first time in 1934, in an exclusive recital of her own works. Her interest in using indigenous music as material for vocal works led her to musicology. With several award-winning works, she became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music in 1946.
