Son of Luiz Gonzaga, he lived in Rio de Janeiro taking part in samba events in Estácio neighborhood. There he met Ivan Lins and Aldir Blanc who, like him, would be revealed by university festivals. His song Comportamento geral, against military dictatorship, achieved big success but he was persecuted by censorship.
