João learned to play guitar with his father and started composing to some groups in Meier, where he lived. He debuts professionally with the song Corrente de Aço, recorded by Elizeth Cardoso. He also participated in the foundation of samba school Tradição and was reponsible for the creation of Clube do Samba to preserve and disseminate the samba tradition.
