Composer, he had an important role to history of samba in Rio de Janeiro, especialy at samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueira, which he was one of the founders. Born and raised in Morro da Mangueira, a carioca neighborhod, he met Cartola, his most frequent partner. He was responsible for inclusion of historical elements in the sambas, which would later become a common practice.
